Alan Schuchman joined the firm in 2013 after 7 years as Corporate Counsel for Claims and Litigation for global engineering and construction firm CH2M HILL, Inc. and 7 years in the Labor and Employment group of Holland & Hart, LLP, in Denver, Colorado.

While with CH2M HILL Alan managed claims and litigation worldwide involving alleged professional negligence, personal injuries and fatalities, various torts, breach of contract claims, mechanics liens, terminations, administrative complaints, OSHA citations, and various other claims. Additionally, Alan provided training on issues of risk, change management and avoidance of disputes.

While at Holland & Hart Alan focused on the representation of local, national and international clients in state and federal litigation, jury and bench trials, arbitrations, administrative proceedings, and mediations, involving contract, lease and other commercial disputes, insurance coverage disputes, common law employment claims, Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, ADA, ERISA, restrictive covenants, misappropriation of trade secrets, labor campaigns and disputes, wage and hour law matters, wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, unemployment claims, personal injury, negligence, premises liability, construction litigation, First Amendment litigation, and more. He also spent significant time counseling clients, including drafting employee handbooks, policies and contracts/agreements and training on Human Resource issues.

Alan’s practice at Skellenger Bender combines his past experience as he now focuses on representation of design professionals and others in construction litigation and counseling, and represents both employers and employees in all types of employment litigation, and advises on handbooks, policies, non-compete agreements and more.

Alan is admitted to practice in the federal and state courts of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Colorado.

Throughout his career Alan has been a frequent author, presenter, and trainer on human resource issues and the avoidance of risk for engineering/construction firms.

Construction Law and Design Professional Representation

Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Inc., v. City of Seattle, et al., represented engineer in defense of professional negligence claim. Successfully secured dismissal of lawsuit through dispositive motion.

Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital v. Baker Construction & Development, Inc., et al. represented geotechnical engineer and special inspection firm in multi-party construction defect case asserting professional negligence and violation of the Consumer Protection Act. Plaintiff sought more than $800,000 in damages and client was able to settle for only $50,000.

Crystal Palace, LLC v. YK Siding, et al., represented insurance broker in defense of lawsuit alleging, in part, negligence for obtaining insufficient insurance for developer/contractor. Successfully secured dismissal of case through dispositive motion.

Represented homeowners against developer/contractor for claims arising out of construction and design of new home and secured six figure recovery.
